The Directorate-General for Home Affairs of the European Commission has approved funding for the operation and development of the Network of Centres of Excellence in the fight against cybercrime – SENTER (Strengthening European Network Centres of Excellence in Cybercrime). The network comprises recognised universities and research centres from the older EU member states and three from the group of newer EU member states. Among them is the Laboratory for Open Systems and Networks of the Jožef Stefan Institute.
The network's activities are dedicated to research on methods and techniques for preventing cybercrime and cyber terrorism, as well as to the transfer and exchange of knowledge with stakeholders from the civilian sector, prosecutors, and law enforcement agencies. Particular attention will be given to establishing partnerships and cooperation with similar institutions in the USA, Latin America, Africa, Australia, and Asia, as cybercrime knows no borders and operates in global cyber networks.
