At the ERK 2025 conference, held on 25 and 26 September 2025 in Portorož, a paper titled “Combining Combinatorial Methods and Block-Based Crossover to Improve Unit Commitment Solutions” was presented. The authors are Samed Bajrić and Davud Topalović from E5, and Izudin Softić, Amir Tokić and Nedžmija Demirović from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, University of Tuzla, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The paper was developed within the framework of the bilateral research project “Development of a new algorithm for minimising production costs in the electric power system using mathematical combinatorics”, conducted jointly by the Jožef Stefan Institute and the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, University of Tuzla.
The research focuses on efficient unit commitment scheduling, which critically affects the reliability, stability and cost-effectiveness of the power grid. The proposed method combines combinatorial techniques with an innovative block-based crossover approach, enabling a reduction in the number of combinations while improving the quality of final solutions. Test results show that this approach can reduce total operating costs of the power system while maintaining its reliability and feasibility.
