On Friday, 23 September 2011, the Researchers' Night 2011 event took place in Ljubljana and Novo mesto. In Ljubljana, the event was held at the Jožef Stefan Institute, at the House of Experiments, at Prešeren Square, at the Ljubljana Marsh Regional Park, and at the Academy of Fine Arts; in Novo mesto, it was held at the Janez Trdina Cultural Centre.
Researchers' Night (http://ec.europa.eu/research/researchersnight) is a pan-European event organised by the European Union on the last Friday in September in numerous European cities simultaneously. As we have already mentioned, this year's Researchers' Night took place on 23 September in 320 European cities and 32 countries, where visitors could attend more than 800 events. Since its inception, Researchers' Night has carried the message 'Researchers are among us'. Visitors were able to learn about the career opportunities of a researcher and try out the role for a moment themselves in a pleasant social setting. The European Commission aims with this initiative to spread a positive image of researchers in the general public, dispel negative stereotypes, and show all that is possible for young people who choose such a career.
The Slovenian public was able to meet researchers in all possible fields on the day of the event, socialise with them, ask them questions, and have fun. Numerous scientific fields were presented either through lectures or interesting demonstrations. We mention only the crazy chemistry school – attractive chemical-physical experiments, a nano-worlds exhibition, a presentation of two humanoid robots, and numerous interesting lectures.
Approximately 5,000 visitors of various age groups and fields of work gathered at the event. The event at Prešeren Square was opened by the Mayor of the City Municipality of Ljubljana, Mr. Zoran Janković, the Director of the Jožef Stefan Institute, dr. Jadran Lenarčič, a professor at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, UL, prof. dr. Janez Tušek, head of the INSARTY project, and prof. dr. Borka Jerman Blažič. The programme was hosted by Sašo Hribar.
As part of the Researchers' Night event, we also marked the 20th anniversary of the first internet connection in Slovenia with a programme titled From a scientific project to a globally indispensable network for people, devices, and information (http://www.isoc-drustvo.si/). The event was enlivened by participants and researchers who had been involved in establishing the first internet connection in Slovenia. They showed how the internet came to Slovenia and what it meant for Slovenia at the time of independence to have access to the most important global information network. The programme was also oriented towards the future. What will the new internet bring us? What is the contribution of the internet in overcoming the economic crisis? New research is primarily focused on the development of services and technologies for economic recovery, and thereby continues to confirm the fact that the internet is the greatest and most important innovation of the 20th century.
