E5 – LABORATORY FOR OPEN SYSTEMS AND NETWORKS

Description

Laboratory of Open Systems and Networks has years of experience in research and development in the area of network and telecommunication development both from the technical and innovation and socio-economic point of view, mostly within the EU projects.

The Laboratory members were leading the national part of the COSINE project that set up the academic network infrastructure in Europe. The first Internet connectivity between Slovenia and the rest of the world was set up in 1991 within the Laboratory computers and the Dutch institute for High Energy Physics- NIKHEF. That paved the way for setting up the national academic and educational network of Slovenia. Later the research in the area of networking was performed within the EU funded projects in collaboration with the telecommunication industry and academic centers among them: CADENUS, FAIN, DAIDALOS, BREATH, P2PNext and EIFFEL. The topic addressed in this area of research were focused on the provision of QoS in IP networks (CADENUS), provision of new protocols for neighboring discovery and setting the security architecture in active networks (FAIN), developing network technology for pervasive computing (DAIDALOS), designing socio-economics models for promotion of broadband networks and economic assessment of the technology for broadband network backbone upgrading (BREATH) and the study and design of the capacity and the property of the Future Internet (EIFFEL). Peer to peer networking in the context of Content Delivery Networks was studied and TV platform was developed within the project P2PNext.

In the Flex4Grid project we have improved the smart grid operation by utilizing the prosumers flexibility based on innovative use of the ICT technologies. We have also developed a dynamic energy consumption forecasting model together with data analytic tools for peak events evaluation.

Some of the research activities resulted in some standardized solutions especially in the area of secure networking and privacy provision. Secure and long-term archiving in on-line environment was standardized within the IETF standards tracks.

Current activities are focused on developing affordable Future Internet Scenarios and acceptable Internet governance model. Research dealing with the e-services is currently taking part within the eSENS project from the Policy and Innovation program of EU.
