Duration: 1.1.2024 – 31.12.2025

Development of a new algorithm for minimising production costs in the electric power system (EES) using mathematical combinatorics is a scientific research project between Republic of Slovenia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, co-funded by the Slovenian Research and Innovation Agency and the Ministry of Civil Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The aim of the project is to find the optimal schedule for the generators in order to minimise production costs, taking into account various parameters such as operating costs, technical limitations and the required spinnig reserve. Current optimisation solutions in EES have certain limitations and shortcomings. Traditional approaches often rely on heuristic methods or linear optimisation techniques, which can only provide sub-optimal solutions. This limitation leads to higher generation costs and potentially inappropriate generator scheduling, and a new algorithm needs to be developed to make EES more efficient and economical. Mathematical combinatorics offers powerful tools for the analysis and optimisation of combinatorial problems, and the application of these methods to the optimal scheduling of generators in EES can bring significant benefits. The development of a new algorithm for minimising the generation costs in EES using mathematical combinatorics will enable more accurate modelling of the complex interactions between generators and other EES elements. The algorithm will take into account different variables such as generator capacities, generation costs, and start-up and shut-down costs and create an optimal schedule that minimises the cost of electricity generation.
